AXXUM Packaging Hamburg affected by fire
On Monday, 25 August, a fire broke out in a warehouse on Müggenburger Straße in Hamburg-Veddel, causing several pressurised gas cylinders to explode. The detonations caused considerable damage to the adjacent industrial premises and also posed a threat to neighbouring businesses.
Support for emergency services on site
The Hamburg Fire Brigade was busy extinguishing the fire for several days with a large contingent of personnel. Due to the explosions, the surrounding roads had to be closed off over a wide area. Employees of AXXUM Packaging Hamburg actively supported the emergency services. Among other things, they used a reach stacker to move containers, thus facilitating the extinguishing and securing work.
Extent of the damage
The effects are clearly visible on the surrounding industrial sites. The AXXUM Packaging Hamburg site was also affected: the impact of the gas cylinders left marks on the ground and caused damage to buildings and storage areas.
Operational impact and outlook
Clean-up work on the AXXUM site is already in full swing. Based on initial estimates, the company expects deliveries and collections to resume as normal from the beginning of next week. Until then, access to the affected area will remain restricted due to safety measures. Alternative AXXUM locations are available to customers for urgent cases.
This incident once again highlights the importance of clear procedures and emergency plans in port and logistics operations in order to minimise the impact of unforeseeable disruptions.
